"Overpriced and Low Quality" 2009-07-07
By Andrew (Meriden, CT USA)
This model is the 3rd Friedrich AC I've owned in the last 9 years. First one died in 5 years, second one died in 3 years, and this one died in 1 year. The only reason I stayed with Friedrich was that I had a sleave installed in my wall and it was easy to just replace the AC unit.

My neighbor has had a no-name unit for 7 years that cost $200, as opposed to my paying $600 for this one, nevermind the prior ones.

I'll never buy another Friedrich. They may have been good in the past, but I think they're low-quality at this point, never mind way overpriced.

"Solid AC" 2009-05-07
By dhyard (Beverly Hills, CA United States)
This thing really throws out the cold air. I measured the air temperature at 26 deg. coming out of the vent. Most other AC's I've had are around 38-40 deg. I really like the programmable features as I have it set to go on about an hour or 2 before I go to bed so my room is nice and cool, and it goes off in the middle of the night. The low fan speed is also very low which makes it quieter. I've noticed on a lot of other units the low speed is not that low, so you get more fan noise. Also the compressor seems relatively quiet, not sure if it's any quieter than other units, but I don't have a problem sleeping with this on, and I'm sensitive to noise when I sleep.

On the negative side, when the compressor first comes on it's a little noisier for a couple minutes then quiets down. So if it's cycling on and off very much, it can be irritating, probably not too noticeable though if it's not in a bedroom. Also the thermostat goes down to 60 deg, but it won't get the room that cold, it usually starts cycling on and off at about 67-68, but it still can get the room down to 64-65 deg.

It's a solid AC, seems like it shouldn't have the negatives I mentioned for the price of the unit, but it still throws out a lot of very cold air, so it could be worth it.

"Not worth the premium price" 2008-06-25
By Stephen J. Vincent (Boston, MA USA)
I bought this because of a Consumer Reports recommendation that it was the quietest 8000 BTU unit available. Maybe scientific instruments would indeed reveal that it is quieter, but I couldn't observe it. Considering the huge price differential, any difference in sound is meaningless.

To its credit, this unit is very heavy duty, made in Texas. Fancy features I don't care about include a remote control and digital thermostat with clock setback option.

To its detriment it's hard to lift and just as noisy as units costing half as much. I don't recommend this item.
